Sr. Marie was one of the first women who during the Communist regime and under the direction of Fr. Methodius Minařík, O. Carm., began the community of cloistered nuns in the country in secret.

Sr. Merlina Bernadette Bulangis, Carm.O.L., died in a bus accident on Easter Monday, April 1, 2002, in the Philippines. She was travelling to a retreat in Mindanao when the bus fell down a cliff. She was 33 years old and is the first death in the Congregation.


Emmanuel Siswanto Poespowardojo, O. Carm.

Fr. Emmanuel Siswanto Poespowardojo, O.Carm., a member of the Indonesian Province, died on Saturday, April 13, 2002 in Indonesia.
He was born in 1929. He served in a variety of ministries, including as Provincial of his province from 1973-1979 and as the head of schools. He retired as headmaster of St. Albertus High School, Dempo in 1997 after 30 years but was reappointed in December 2001.

He was ordained in 1959 together with his older brother, Fr. Djanardono Poespowardojo, O. Carm.

Fr. Tadeusz Stuleblak, O.Carm., a member of the Polish Province, died after a long illness on April 15, 2002 in Lublin. He was 69 years old.


Theo Meijerink, O. Carm.

Fr. Theo (Theodorus, Antonius Theresia) Meijerink, O. Carm., died April 17, 2002, in Zwolle (The Netherlands), after an illness of several weeks.
Born July 24 1923 in Zwolle, professed in October 1946, and ordained in 1951, he worked as a missionary in Indonesia (1953-1986) and then as a parish priest in Haarle until January 2001. He was a pastor who focused attention on the young people. He was the leader of "Legio Mariae" in Malang. In the last weeks of his illness he prayed to the Lord "I wait for the Lord, the One whole waits for me." He had a particular devotion to Mary, Mother of Carmel.

Richard Nagle, a former Assistant General to the Order from 1965-1971, died Monday, April 29, 2002 in a Carmelite nursing home in West Palm Beach, FL (USA).
He was born in 1911, professed first vows in 1933 and ordained priest in 1937. He also served as Prior Provincial of the St. Elias Province from 1961-1965 when he was elected Assistant General.
